Unit 8, Session 5: The Day the Sun Stood Still
Joshua 10:115
Christ Connection
Joshua’s name means “Yahweh is salvation.” God fought for Joshua and the Israelites, saving them and giving them victory over their enemies. God brought us salvation by sending His Son, Jesus, to die on the cross, giving us victory over sin and death.
Adult Connection Point:
The driving force behind God’s messengers is Christ’s love for the world He came to save because “Jesus is our salvation.” John 3:16 is clear that God’s love was the motivation for giving Jesus. God has made a way for sinful people to become His friends instead of His enemies. The love of God compels us to live for Him and to pour ourselves out for others. This was Jesus’ desire (John 12:50), and it now becomes our own. We live for a resurrected God and Savior, not for ourselves, and this should press us into action.
Family Devotion:
Materials: Bible, flashlight, a dark room
Experiment with making shadows with the flashlight. Move the flashlight in the direction of the sun from east to west over an object. Notice how the shadow shifts depending on where the “sun” is.
Read Joshua 10:14.
Say: The king of Jerusalem was afraid of the Israelites. He had heard of the defeat of Ai and was greatly alarmed they would be next. So the king of Jerusalem joined forces with other kings and attacked Gibeon, an ally of Israel.
Read Joshua 10:813.
Ask: What were some miraculous events God performed to secure victory for the Israelites?
Say: God fought for Joshua and gave Israel the victory. Just as God used Joshua to defeat the Israelites’ enemies, God sent Jesus to defeat sin and death. He demonstrated His love toward us by sending Jesus to die on the cross for us. Because of Jesus’ sacrifice, we now are accepted by God.
Has God miraculously worked in the lives of your family members? Praise and thank Him!
Do you need help with a relationship or need God’s intervention? Ask Him to show you what to do. Thank Him for calling you a friend. (See John 15:15.)
