Holy Week Devotion 2014-Day 4

Devotional #4

Jesus is Arrested

Read: Luke 22:47-54

*For younger children only use the questions in red in the Ask section, and then complete the Apply, Activity, and Pray.

Ask:
P How did Judas show the guard’s who Jesus was? (vs. 47)
P What did Jesus ask Judas? (Vs. 48)
P How do you think Jesus felt when his friend helped the guard’s to capture him?
How do you think, you would of felt if you were Jesus?
P How did Jesus’ followers feel when Judas told the guards who Jesus was? (Vs. 49-50)
P What did Jesus do when one of his followers cut off a mans ear? (Vs. 51)
P What happened to Jesus after Judas kissed him? (vs. 54)

 Apply:

· Jesus is the best example for us to follow, because Jesus never did anything wrong. Even though people came to arrest Jesus he was still kind to them. He had the power to do anything he wanted, but he chose to show them kindness. Have everyone in the family think of a place in your house or the car where it is hard sometimes to be kind to others. Maybe it is in the morning when you have to wait for your turn in the bathroom, or maybe it is sitting beside your brother or sister in the car when they won’t stop touching you.

As a family travel to each of the places everyone has named and share a way you can be kind to the other person even when it is hard.

Activity:
Place the pieces inside of this envelope on the wreath circle like the picture shows.

Pray:
· Thank Jesus for being the perfect example of how to be kind to others and ask him to help you be kind to your family even when they are bothering you.

Holy Week Devotion 2014-Day 3

Devotional #3

Jesus Prays

Read: Luke 22:39-46

*For younger children only use the
questions in red in the Ask section, and then complete the Apply, Activity, and Pray.

Ask:
P What did Jesus tell the disciples to pray? (vs. 40) (Temptation is when you want to do something that you know you are not suppose to.)
P What did Jesus pray? (vs. 42)
P What do you think he was talking about? (Jesus knew  he was going to be put on the cross and die for us. He was asking God if he really needed to die. Jesus knew it would be very painful.)
P What happened after Jesus prayed? (vs. 43.) (An angel gave him strength and Jesus knew he had to die for us.)

Apply:
  • Think of a time you were scared. Write one time you were scared on each post-it note. Come up with as many as you can. For example: I am afraid of the dark, or a big kid at school. Place those post-it notes on any wall in your house.
  • Read Joshua 1:9
  • God will be with you wherever you go, so there is no need to fear!
  • Now take down each post-it note that God gave you courage during that time.
  • See that God is always with us and will give us strength and courage when we get scared.
  • A great thing you can do when something bad happens is to pray. Tell God how you feel. He will give you strength to help you through your fear.

Activity:
  • Place the pieces inside of this envelope on the wreath circle like the picture shows.

Pray:
  • Ask God to give you strength and courage when you are afraid.

Holy Week Devotion 2014-Day 2

Devotional #2

The Last Supper

Read: Luke 22:14-20

*For younger children only use the
questions in red in the Ask section, and then complete the Apply, Activity, and Pray.

Ask:
P What did Jesus say the bread represented in Verse 19?
P What did Jesus say the wine or juice represented that was in the cup in verse 20?
P Why did Jesus tell us to do this in verse 19?
P Why do we take the Lord’s Supper? (To remember what Jesus did for us when he died on the cross. He gave us his body and blood on the cross.)
P Who should eat and drink during the Lord’s Supper that we do at church? (Since drinking the juice, and eating the bread is a symbol of the Last Supper we believe that people who have become a Christian should drink the juice and eat the bread when we take the Lord’s Supper.)

For more information on Becoming a Christian see the
“Becoming a Christian Envelope.”

Apply:
  • Point to each picture below and ask: What do these remind you of? Let every family member respond.

  • Each picture reminds us of something special. That is what we are doing when we take the Lord’s Supper. It reminds us of the last night Jesus spent with his disciples.  When Christians participate in the Lord’s Supper it helps them to remember that Jesus told us he would die for us on the cross to make a way for us to go to Heaven if we accepted Jesus as our Lord and Savior.

Activity:
  • Place the pieces inside of this envelope on the wreath circle like the picture shows.

Pray:
  • Pray thanking Jesus for dying on the cross for our sins and for modeling the Lord’s Supper. Ask him to forgive you of your sins and to help you make better choices that honor God.
